New Numbers by October 17

June 23rd, 2008

I posted a while back that the new numbers will be implemented on July 15th. Turns out that is when preparations will start, and will need 3 months to complete. So, the proper date is now October 17, and this should be the final delay as this decision has been approved by the Cabinet. Ministries are well and ready for this change but the commercial and economic sectors will need time to adapt. The new 8 digits system will follow this system:

“00″ for International calls
“112″ will replace 777
“2″ will be added to residential phone numbers.
“3″ Reserved for future ministry numbers.
“4″ To be added to new numbers beginning with 4 and Zain numbers starting with 4.
“5″ For the third telecommunication company.
“6″ For Al?Wataniya lines which start with the number 6.
“7″ To be added to Zain and Al?Wataniya lines which start with the number 7.
“8″ Reserved for the future use
“9″ To be added to Zain numbers that start with 9.

I do not know why can’t they just simplfy things and add a zero instead of all these numbers, it is the same idea but instead each number will have an extra digit which is a zero, many countries have done that.

Hmm, I think I will post that.

[...] Not Zero? Posted by: Purgatory at 12:35 am in Technology So I was reading Fonzy’s post on the changes in phone numbers by adding an extra digit, with so many permutations, and then I [...]

that would work but then they wont be able to organize numbers as per area or usage.

Not true, adding a zero doesnt change how numbers are organised, wataniya always has the 6, so 06 is the same, 09 for Zain is same, won’t confuse people and easier to change for all. Only for emergency 3 digit numbers, I agree with the change. They added a 2 to all 6 digit home numbers almost 25 years ago, so adding a 2 to all residential numbers will not enable you to know the area unless you see the second and third numbers, its all the same.

Hmmm… I don’t like this, my number will look ugly and not as easy as it used to be! :(
