Tourist Attractions in Bangkok

March 4th, 2008

I would have to say that the main touristic attractions in Bangkok are the many temples and the Buddha shrines spread all over the city. We spent over 8 hours of walking from temple to another and we came across a lot of interesting structures. Our guide explained to us the history behind everything but I dont remember everything she said, since I’m not really into this kind of stuff. I’m not sure which pictures are for what temples but I remember visiting at least two temples, the Emerald Buddha temple and The Temple of Dawn. Here are some random pics of the temples:

All the temples had different kinds of statues (of which many were made of solid gold! - first pic) and other sculptures that served as ornaments. The small Chinese sculptures in the second pic were used in the old days to provide balance for boats as Thailand traded with China.

Some temples served as burial grounds where under each statue were the ashes of people cremated

The hottest attraction, I would say is the Grand Palace. This place was pretty huge, it alone took us 2 hours to cover!

Naturally, it was heavily guarded with soldiers spread out all over

In the palace was the one and only Reclining Buddha in the world

Like I said, I am not into visiting historical monuments and all that, but it was very enlightening seeing all this and getting to know a whole new culture.
