Benefits of The Seat Belt

December 4th, 2007

This is a post to a friend who got into a car accident this morning who is reading this post right now.  She was with her friend on their way to work on Gulf Road when some crazy woman cut them off and forced them into the sidewalk, making the car flip a few times onto the other side of the highway.  Luckily nothing happened to either one.  The girl driving was wearing her seat belt which probably saved her life.  As for my friend, she was too cool as she “doesn’t wear seat belts”. So this post is for her listing all the benefits of the seat belt and I hope she learned a lesson and will start wearing always from now on…. YOU GOT LUCKY AND LUCK RUNS OUT! Luckily she got out alive, with a minor headache and a shock but I asked her if she will ever not wear a seat belt… and she said she will always wear one.  Too bad she had to have an accident to learn the lesson.

A message to all those who get into a car without a seat belt: Stop being stupid, not wearing a seat belt does not make you “cool”, it actually makes you an idiot.  A car is a death trap, you never know when it will get you.  And, by the way, this is coming from a person who has been in two close-death accidents so what I say comes from experience.  BUCKLE UP!

Here are some statistics about seat belts I got off the net; lets hope 17 are enough to knock some sense into you!: 1. One out of every five drivers will be involved in a traffic crash this year.
2. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death among people age 44 and younger and the number one cause of head and spinal cord injury.
3. Approximately 35,000 people die in motor vehicle crashes each year. About 50 percent (17,000) of these people could be saved if they wore their safety belts.

4. More than 90 percent of all motorists believe safety belts are good idea, but less than 14 percent actually use them.
5. For every one percent increase in safety belt use, 172 lives and close to $100 million in annual injury and death costs could be saved.
6. Safety belts when used properly reduce the number of serious traffic injuries by 50 percent and fatalities by 60-70 percent.
7. For maximum protection safety belts should be fastened before traveling any distance or speed. Seventy-five percent of crash deaths and injuries occur within 25 miles of home. More than half of all injury-producing motor vehicle crashes involve low speeds under 40 m.p.h.
8. Motorists are 25 times are more likely to be killed or seriously injured when they are “thrown clear” than when remain inside their vehicle.
9. In a 30 m.p.h. collision an unbelted 160 lb. Person can strike another passenger, crash through a windshield and/or slam into the vehicle’s interior with a 4,800 lb. force.

10. Motorists can increase safety belt usage by example and verbal reminders. Nine out of 10 people buckle up when asked.
11. Safety belt use is one of the best defenses against the unpredictable actions of the drunk driver.
12. Today over 25 countries around the world have some type of mandatory safety belt law. Results of these laws were measured; usage rate went from 20-25 percent before passage to 60-90 percent after passage.
13. A common cause of death and injury to children in motor vehicles is being crushed by adults who are not wearing safety belts. On out of four serious injuries to passengers is caused by occupants being thrown into each other.
14. About 80 percent of all injuries to children in car crashes are injuries to the head, causing brain damage, permanent disfigurement, epilepsy or death.
15. Of every 100 children who die in motor vehicle crashes at least 80 would survive if they were properly secured in an approved child safety seat or safety belts.
16. Three out of four families with child safety seats fail to use them correctly. Adults need to follow manufacturer’s instructions and secure seats properly before every trip.
17. An estimated 80 percent of American children area immunized against contagious diseases, but less than 10 percent are properly restrained when riding in a motor vehicle.

The latest statistics says that sometimes “wearing the seat belt” could kill you as well. Flying out of the car could save ur life sometimes. One of my friends died coz he was wearing the seat belt while the car was burning and it was stocked.
I had an accident many years ago and thanks god I flew out of it after few flips.
But in general.. Wearing the seat belt is better and wiser than not wearing it.
    salamt to ur friend fonz

    and HOW is that ?

  12. Comment by Halicy on December 4, 2007 1:02 pm

    Exactly Fonzy :)
Its much wiser to wear it. Also most of the accidents in the city are small, so at least the seat belt will save ur head from crashing into the wind shield.

Nice post! I put my seat belt even if I am just moving the car 2 meters to a better parking spot. I got used to it I feel like I am gonna fall out of my seat if I don’t have it on!

they should have a better way for protecting passengers in cars, like in the movie demolition man, instant foam.

seatbelts could be dangerious at times

  27. Comment by MSB on December 5, 2007 1:32 pm

i thought u left the building halicy… well, then allow me to tell u about an accident i almost had not long ago…

car in front of me with its left turn signal on waiting for on coming traffic to make its turn. me behind it, the same.. left turn signal on.. waiting..

i look in my rear view mirror and some GUY is coming, full speed ahead and not paying attn! i move forward a bit and pray that he looks.. he doesnt..

FINALLY he notices that traffic in front of him is stopped and he slams on the brakes. mind u, the right lane was completely empty, but he doesnt move to that lane. i pulled my car forward and turned it to the right a bit to get out of his way. it was at that point that he realized that he should at least swerve away from me.. so he turned it to the left… by the time his car finally stopped, it was more than half way past my car! had i (female) not taken action, he (male) would’ve slammed into my car and made me slam into the guy in front of me!

  28. Comment by Fonzy on December 5, 2007 1:38 pm

good think MSB…. u actually use the rear view mirror to see upcoming traffic and not to check ur makeup like most girls do… not many of u around, i can tell u that :)

  29. Comment by Halicy on December 5, 2007 2:47 pm

LOOOOL MSD, i loved the (male) & (female) thingy :P
u proved ur point and so did i.. Peace??
Fonz.. Hahaha that was Painful buddy

  30. Comment by MSB on December 6, 2007 12:19 am

=) sure.. peace.. but only if u start calling me MSB instead of MSD! :)

  32. Comment by Fonzy on December 10, 2007 3:38 pm

thx intlxpatr. what matters most is that my friend is actually wearing the seat belt now. Though she broke a nail during the first time, she stuck with it :)
